Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Use shared bush taxis (sept-places) for intercity travel — 5-8x cheaper than private vehicle hire

💡

Eat thiéboudienne and local dishes at neighborhood restaurants and market stalls rather than tourist-facing establishments

💡

Negotiate all prices before engaging services — always agree on taxi fares, guide fees, and tour prices in advance

💡

Book domestic flights well in advance — Mauritania Airlines prices increase significantly close to departure

💡

Stay at auberges (guesthouses) in Atar and Chinguetti rather than tourist camps — significantly cheaper with similar experience

💡

Visit Banc d'Arguin independently via public transport to Iwik rather than on organized tours from Nouakchott

Free & Cheap Activities

Experience Mauritania without spending a fortune.

Free

Nouakchott Grand Mosque (Exterior)

The largest mosque in Mauritania, a gift from Saudi Arabia, features impressive architecture viewable from outside at any time. Best at sunset when the minaret is beautifully illuminated.

Free

Port de Pêche (Fishing Port)

Completely free to visit, the colorful fishing port is one of Mauritania's most photogenic and culturally rich experiences. Arrive 3-6PM when the pirogues return with their Atlantic catch.

Free

Nouakchott Beach Walk

The long Atlantic beach on the western edge of Nouakchott is free and accessible. Best on Friday afternoons when local families gather with picnics.

Free

Marché Capitale Exploration

Free to wander Nouakchott's largest traditional market. An immersive cultural experience with no entry fee — budget only for food tastings if desired.

Free

Mheijrâte Dunes Walk (self-guided)

The dunes above Chinguetti are freely accessible on foot from town. A self-guided sunrise or sunset walk costs nothing beyond the guide tip if you choose to bring one.

Free

Amogjar Pass Scenery

Stopping at viewpoints along the Amogjar Pass road between Atar and Chinguetti costs nothing and delivers some of the most spectacular geological scenery in Saharan Africa.

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU) — 1 USD ≈ 40 MRU (2025). The old Ouguiya (MRO) was replaced by the new Ouguiya at 10:1 in 2018. Ensure you receive the new MRU notes.

Exchange USD or EUR at banks in Nouakchott or major hotels for best rates. Avoid street money changers who offer unofficial rates. Banque Mauritanienne pour le Commerce International (BMCI) and Banque Nationale de Mauritanie offer reliable exchange.

ATMs

ATMs (Bancomat) available at major banks in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. Very limited or non-existent in Atar, Chinguetti, and desert areas. Always carry sufficient cash before departing the capital.

Credit Cards

Visa cards accepted at Azalaï Hotel and a few upmarket restaurants in Tevragh Zeina. Mastercard less widely accepted. Cash is essential throughout most of Mauritania.

Tipping

10-15% at restaurants with attentive service. $2-5 per day for desert guides. $5-10 tip for driver on multi-day trips. Tips in USD often welcomed by tourist-facing staff.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate required at entry — obtain vaccination 10+ days before travel ($30-80 abroad)
  • Local SIM card registration ($5-15 for card and initial data) — needed for communication outside hotels
  • Guide fees at Chinguetti libraries and archaeological sites ($10-30 per site) are separate from official admission
  • 4x4 costs for desert travel — virtually all Adrar region sights require expensive 4x4 hire ($80-200/day)
  • Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover — essential and often not included in basic policies
  • Visa on arrival or e-visa fee varies by nationality — budget $30-80
  • Safe drinking water costs — bottled water essential throughout at $0.75-2 per 1.5L bottle
