Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Eat where locals eat — restaurants near Bahti Meskerem Square and the Central Market area serve excellent injera meals for $4-8, less than half the price of tourist-facing restaurants

💡

Travel on shared taxis (blue and white) rather than private hire — Asmara city fares drop from $5-8 to $0.50-1.50 per person

💡

Exchange currency at hotels or licensed exchange desks to avoid counterfeit risk from unofficial changers who often short-change tourists

💡

Asmara Palace and Crystal Hotel bars offer happy hour pricing on Asmara Beer — the best value for cold drinks in the country

💡

Buy spices, coffee, and craft souvenirs at the Biassa Market rather than tourist-adjacent souvenir shops where prices are 2-3x higher

💡

A combined Massawa day trip visit and Keren day trip covers Eritrea's two most important excursion destinations — plan them on separate days to avoid rushed visits

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Eritrean Nakfa (ERN)

Exchange USD or EUR at official hotel exchange desks or licensed banks. The Nakfa is not freely convertible abroad. Bring all required cash (USD and EUR preferred) before entering Eritrea.

ATMs

ATMs do not accept foreign bank cards in Eritrea. There is no reliable ATM network for international visitors. Bring all the cash you need for your entire trip in USD or EUR.

Credit Cards

Credit and debit cards are not accepted anywhere in Eritrea for tourists. Cash transactions only throughout the country.

Tipping

10% at restaurants, $5-10 per day for guides, $1-2 for hotel porters. Tip directly in cash to the individual.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Travel permits required for all destinations beyond 25 km from Asmara ($5-15 per permit at the Ministry of Tourism)
  • Cash-only economy — bring more cash than expected as there are no ATMs for foreign cards
  • Visa on arrival for most nationalities costs $40-70 USD payable in hard currency
  • Photography permit may be required at some official sites ($5-10)
  • Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential — quality medical facilities are very limited outside Asmara
  • Private vehicle hire for excursions with driver is nearly unavoidable for visiting sites like Qohaito ($60-100/day)
