Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Eat where locals eat — a full meal at a local restaurant costs $5-10 versus $20-40 at hotel restaurants serving similar food

💡

Negotiate all taxi fares in advance and ask your hotel for current typical prices to avoid overpaying as a foreign visitor

💡

Book W National Park safaris through local tour operators rather than hotel concierges — prices are 20-30% lower for identical trips

💡

Share vehicle costs for day trips to Kouré and Dosso with other travelers — split between 4 people the per-person cost drops dramatically

💡

Buy cold drinks and water at the Grand Marché rather than hotel mini-bars — you'll pay a quarter of the price

Free & Cheap Activities

Experience Niger without spending a fortune.

Free

Kennedy Bridge Sunset

Walk to Kennedy Bridge on the Niger River at sunset — locals gather on the riverbank and bridge creating a vibrant free social scene with spectacular light.

Free

Grand Mosque of Niamey Exterior

The capital's main mosque can be viewed and photographed from outside free of charge — the minarets are a striking landmark visible across the city.

Free

Parc de la Gendarmerie

A green park in Niamey's Plateau district with shaded walking paths and local family life. Free entry and a peaceful alternative to hotel grounds.

Free

Niamey Riverfront Stroll

Walking along the Niger River embankment south of Kennedy Bridge costs nothing and offers boat views, fishermen at work, and cooling river breezes.

Free

Grand Marché Window Shopping

Browsing the stalls of Niamey's Grand Market is free — the colours, sounds, and energy of West African commerce are a cultural experience in themselves.

Free

Boubou Hama Cultural Center Garden

The garden and exterior of the cultural center on Boulevard de la République are accessible for free — exhibits inside have a small admission charge.

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

West African CFA Franc (XOF). 1 USD ≈ 600-620 XOF. Currency is pegged to the Euro.

Exchange USD or EUR at major hotel reception desks or at BIA Niger bank branches in Niamey for near-market rates. Avoid informal street money changers. The Radisson Blu and Noom Hotel offer currency exchange to non-guests.

ATMs

ATMs available at BIA Niger, Ecobank, and Orabank branches in Niamey. Most accept international Visa/Mastercard. Withdraw in the mornings as machines sometimes run out of cash. No reliable ATMs outside Niamey and Zinder — carry sufficient cash when travelling.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at luxury hotels (Radisson Blu, Soluxe, Noom) and Le Pilier restaurant. Most other businesses, markets, and transport are cash only. Inform your bank of travel plans to prevent cards being blocked.

Tipping

10-15% at restaurants is appreciated. Hotel porters 500-1000 XOF. Half-day guide tip $10-20 minimum. Safari guides $20-30 per day. Tipping is not customary for shared taxi drivers.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Airport departure tax — verify current charges at point of booking (often included in international tickets but check)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate required for entry — vaccination itself costs $15-40 depending on country
  • Tourist visa fee — approximately $90-130 depending on nationality, obtained at Niger embassies before travel
  • SIM card and mobile data — 500-1000 XOF for SIM, data bundles $5-15/month for patchy connectivity
  • Water — bottled water is an essential daily cost at 200-500 XOF per 1.5 litre bottle; budget $2-4/day minimum
  • Luggage storage — not widely available; hotel left-luggage service typically 1000-2000 XOF/day
