Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Eat the comida corriente set lunch at local sodas and comedores — 3 courses for $3-6 is Nicaragua's best budget hack

💡

Take chicken buses instead of tourist shuttles — Managua to Granada costs $1 by bus vs $20 by shuttle

💡

Stay in hostels with included breakfast — saves $3-5 per day on your most expensive meal

💡

Buy Flor de Caña rum and local beer at supermarkets (La Colonia, La Union) for half the bar price

💡

Use Uber or Cabify in Managua instead of taxis — typically 20-30% cheaper with no negotiation needed

💡

Visit Masaya Volcano at sunset on the free hour before the evening light show rather than paying for the full night tour

💡

Book volcano boarding tours directly with operators like Bigfoot or Quetzaltrekkers rather than through hotel concierges

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

US Dollar (USD) — widely accepted. Official currency is Nicaraguan Córdoba (NIO) at approximately C$36-38 per $1 USD.

USD accepted almost universally in tourist areas at a fair rate. Use ATMs (Cajeros) for córdobas — better rate than money changers. BanPro and BAC Credomatic ATMs most reliable. Avoid exchange booths at the airport.

ATMs

ATMs widely available in Managua, Granada, León, and San Juan del Sur. Fees of $3-5 per withdrawal are common. Maximum withdrawal typically $200-300 USD. Very limited on Corn Islands and Ometepe — bring cash.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger stores. American Express rarely accepted. Many small restaurants and all markets are cash only. Always carry US dollars or córdobas.

Tipping

10-15% at tourist restaurants (not always expected at local comedores). $5-10 per guide per half-day. $1-2 for hotel porter per bag. Not expected for taxis unless exceptional service.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Entry tax at Augusto C. Sandino Airport: $10 departure fee (sometimes included in airfare — check your ticket)
  • Masaya Volcano night tour costs more ($8-10) than the standard day entry ($4) — worth it but budget accordingly
  • Flor de Caña rum distillery visits cost $15-25 and are not always clearly advertised online
  • Island hopping to Corn Islands requires expensive La Costeña flights ($190-220 round-trip) — not budget-friendly
  • Mandatory guide fees on Volcán Maderas ($20-25) and some national parks are not included in entry prices
  • Tourist taxes added to some hotel bills at 15% IVA (VAT) + 1% tourism tax — check if quoted price is inclusive
  • Ferry tickets to Ometepe Island ($3/person each way) plus taxi on the island add up to $25-40 for a day trip
