Currency & Payment Tips
Essential information about money matters.
Currency
Swedish Krona (SEK)
Best rates at Swedish banks (Swedbank, Handelsbanken) or ATMs. Avoid airport exchange bureaus — rates are poor.
ATMs
ATMs (Bankomats) are widely available throughout Stockholm. Most accept foreign cards with a transaction fee of 15-25 SEK.
Credit Cards
Sweden is essentially cashless — Visa and Mastercard accepted almost everywhere including small cafés and market stalls. Swish (mobile payment) used by locals but requires Swedish phone number.
Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory in Sweden. Rounding up or leaving 5-10% for good service is appreciated but never expected.
Hidden Costs to Watch For
- Hotel tourist tax — some hotels charge a city fee of 20-50 SEK per room per night
- Arlanda Airport surcharge on taxis — taxis from Arlanda charge an extra 95 SEK airport fee
- Museum cloakroom — large bags must be left in lockers at major museums, often 10-20 SEK
- Plastic bag fee — supermarkets charge 3-5 SEK per bag
- Restroom fees — some public toilets charge 10 SEK
- SIM card — a prepaid Swedish SIM (Tele2, Comviq) costs 99-149 SEK with data
