Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Use public buses (ZR minivans) instead of taxis - the $3.50 BBD flat fare takes you anywhere on the island and is a genuine local experience

💡

Self-cater for breakfast and lunch by shopping at supermarkets (Massy, Super Centre) and save restaurant meals for the evenings

💡

Visit Harrison's Cave, Animal Flower Cave, and plantation houses on weekday mornings to avoid the cruise ship crowds and score better service

💡

Rent a car for 2-3 days rather than taking taxis - it costs $80-160 BBD per day but saves money if you're making multiple island excursions

💡

Look for accommodation with kitchen facilities in south coast apartment hotels - cooking your own meals cuts costs dramatically in expensive Barbados

💡

Book catamaran and tour excursions directly with operators rather than through hotel concierge desks, which add significant markup

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Barbados Dollar (BBD). 1 USD = 2 BBD (fixed exchange rate pegged since 1975)

Use ATMs for the best exchange rate. Banks and hotels offer slightly worse rates. US dollars are widely accepted at a fixed 2:1 rate throughout the island.

ATMs

ATMs (Scotiabank, RBC, FirstCaribbean) widely available in Bridgetown, Holetown, Oistins, and major shopping centres. Most ATMs dispense BBD. VISA and Mastercard work reliably.

Credit Cards

VISA and Mastercard accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. American Express less reliable. Small rum shops and market vendors prefer cash. Always carry some BBD cash.

Tipping

10-15% at restaurants where service charge not already added. Check the bill - many restaurants add a mandatory 10% service charge. Tip hotel housekeeping $10-15 BBD per day, tour guides $20-40 BBD.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Tourism accommodation tax (10%) and service charges (10%) added to hotel bills can add 20% to quoted room rates
  • Barbados National Trust site fees - each historical site charges separately ($15-80 BBD each)
  • Car rental temporary driving permit required ($20 BBD) from the rental agency or police station
  • Sunscreen and beach supplies purchased beachside are heavily marked up - buy at a supermarket
  • Airport departure taxes may not be included in budget airline tickets
  • International roaming charges - buy a local Flow or Digicel SIM ($40-60 BBD for data)
