Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

πŸ’‘

Use bar mleczny (milk bars) for lunch β€” these subsidized canteens serve filling traditional Polish food for 15-30 PLN. Bar Bambino in Warsaw and Milkbar Tomasza in Krakow are excellent.

πŸ’‘

Buy city transport day passes or multi-day passes rather than single tickets β€” Warsaw 3-day pass costs 36 PLN vs 4.40 PLN per ride.

πŸ’‘

Travel between cities by bus (FlixBus, Sindbad) rather than train β€” Warsaw to Krakow bus from 25 PLN vs 45+ PLN by express train. Slightly slower but significantly cheaper.

πŸ’‘

Book PKP Intercity trains at least 14 days ahead for promotional fares (promo bilet) β€” Warsaw to Gdansk from 39 PLN vs 100+ PLN on the day.

πŸ’‘

Supermarkets (Biedronka, Lidl, Piotr i Pawel) are excellent for picnic supplies and food souvenirs β€” premium Polish vodka costs half the price of tourist shops.

πŸ’‘

Get the Krakow Tourist Card for 2-3 days of unlimited transport and free museum entry β€” breaks even with just 2 museums and unlimited trams.

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Polish Zloty (PLN, zl). Approximate exchange: 1 USD = 4 PLN, 1 EUR = 4.25 PLN (rates fluctuate).

Use bank ATMs (bankomat) in Poland for the best exchange rates β€” avoid currency exchange booths (kantor) at airports and train stations which charge high commissions. Kantors in city centers offer better rates if you prefer cash exchange.

ATMs

ATMs widely available throughout cities and towns. Major banks (PKO BP, Pekao, Santander, mBank) have reliable ATMs. Select 'without conversion' (bez przeliczenia) when prompted β€” this avoids dynamic currency conversion fees. Limit is typically 1000-1500 PLN per withdrawal.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted almost everywhere in cities including restaurants, shops, and most transport. Contactless payment (zbliΕΌeniowo) is very widely used. American Express accepted at upscale hotels and restaurants only. Small markets and some milk bars may be cash-only.

Tipping

10-15% at restaurants is standard and appreciated. Round up taxi fares. Hotel porters 10-15 PLN per bag. Tour guides 20-50 PLN per person depending on length.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Tourist taxes (oplata miejscowa) of 1.70-2.50 PLN per person per night are charged by some hotels in Krakow and Zakopane β€” not always included in listed room prices
  • Museum luggage storage fees (5-10 PLN) β€” required at most major Polish museums before entry
  • Highway tolls (autostrady) if renting a car β€” A1, A2, and A4 motorways charge 5-20 PLN per section
  • Airport ATM dynamic currency conversion fees β€” always select 'without conversion' to avoid 3-5% hidden fee
  • Auschwitz guided tour is not optional before 10AM β€” free entry but guided tour is required and costs 75 PLN ($19)
  • SIM card (karta SIM) and data top-up β€” budget 30-50 PLN for a Polish SIM with 10-20GB of data from Play, Orange, or T-Mobile
