Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

πŸ’‘

Buy an Urbana transport card for Ljubljana buses β€” card costs €2 with €2 credit, each ride €1.30 instead of €1.60 without card

πŸ’‘

Lunch in Slovenian gostilna restaurants is dramatically cheaper than dinner β€” the same dishes cost 30-40% less at lunch

πŸ’‘

GoOpti shared shuttles to/from Ljubljana airport are up to 60% cheaper than taxis β€” book online in advance

πŸ’‘

Slovenian supermarkets (Mercator, Spar) sell excellent local wines, cheeses, and honey at a fraction of restaurant prices β€” buy picnic supplies

πŸ’‘

The Ljubljana Card (€30/day) gives free public transport, Ljubljana Castle, and museums β€” worthwhile if seeing multiple paid attractions

πŸ’‘

Book Postojna Cave tickets online (2-3 days ahead in summer) to avoid the €0 online booking fee vs walk-up premium pricing

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Euro (€, EUR)

Slovenia uses the Euro (since 2007). No currency exchange needed for Eurozone visitors. Use ATMs (bankomati) for the best rates if coming from outside Europe.

ATMs

ATMs widely available throughout Slovenia including small towns and tourist areas. NLB, Nova KBM, and Unicredit ATMs throughout the country. No fees at most bank ATMs for standard withdrawals.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted almost universally. American Express accepted at major hotels and some restaurants. Contactless payment widely available.

Tipping

10% at sit-down restaurants for good service. Round up taxi fares. Tips not expected at cafΓ©s or fast food but small amounts appreciated.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Highway vignette (€15/week or €30/month) mandatory for driving on Slovenian motorways β€” fines are steep if caught without one
  • Tourist tax (€1-3/night per person) added to most hotel bills beyond quoted room rates
  • Parking in Ljubljana city center: €1.20-2.00/hour in blue and yellow zones
  • Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle combo ticket saves money but neither is cheap β€” budget €40-50 per adult for the day
  • Mountain rescue insurance β€” not a hidden cost but essential: standard travel insurance may not cover Alpine activities above 1500m
