Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Eat at Betio Market and Bairiki Market food stalls for $4-6 AUD meals rather than hotel restaurants

💡

Use local buses ($0.50-1 AUD) the length of South Tarawa rather than taxis for $20+ fares

💡

Buy fresh coconuts from roadside vendors ($1 AUD) for hydration instead of bottled water or soft drinks

💡

Stay in guesthouses or homestays ($25-45 AUD) rather than hotels to reduce costs and get a more authentic experience

💡

WWII sites are free — skip paid tours for the basics but do hire a local guide ($30-50) for at least one session

💡

Self-cater some meals using fresh produce from Betio Market — cheaper and authentic

💡

Book flights to Kiribati in advance — fares from Fiji, Australia, or New Zealand fluctuate and early booking saves significantly

💡

Travel during the low season (Nov-April) for lower accommodation rates at some hotels

Free & Cheap Activities

Experience Kiribati without spending a fortune.

Free

WWII Sites at Betio

The Japanese guns, bunkers, Red Beach, and American Memorial are all free to visit and are among the most historically significant sites in the Pacific War.

Free

Causeway Walk

Walking the length of South Tarawa's causeways is free and provides spectacular simultaneous views of the lagoon and ocean from a unique atoll perspective.

Free

Betio Market

Wandering Betio Market in the morning is a free cultural experience — the fish market, tropical produce, and handicraft stalls are fascinating without spending anything.

Free

Parliament Building Grounds

Kiribati's distinctive Parliament Building on Ambo Island is publicly accessible and provides beautiful lagoon views. The adjacent Cafe at Parliament is cheap for a coffee.

Free

Beach Swimming

Tabwakea Beach, Bonriki Ocean Beach, and other ocean-side beaches are completely free and among the Pacific's most pristine.

Free

Sunset on the Causeway

Watching the sunset from any of South Tarawa's causeways is one of the great free experiences in the Pacific — dramatic light over the lagoon every evening.

Free

Church Service Attendance

Sunday services at Sacred Heart Cathedral and local Protestant churches are open to respectful visitors and provide a moving insight into I-Kiribati spiritual life — one of the highlights of visiting Kiribati.

Free

Ambo Island Mangrove Walk

Walking around Ambo Island through its mangroves and past the Parliament Building is free and offers excellent birdwatching for reef herons, kingfishers, and egrets.

Free

Betio Night Market Browse

Even without buying food, the evening atmosphere at Betio Night Market — the sounds, smells, and community gathering — is a rewarding free cultural experience.

Free

Independence Day Cultural Festival

Kiribati's Independence Day (July 12) includes free public cultural performances, traditional dancing competitions, and community celebrations throughout South Tarawa.

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Australian Dollar (AUD)

Australian dollars are the official and only widely accepted currency in Kiribati. USD may be accepted at some hotels at an unfavourable rate. Exchange to AUD before arrival — rates in Kiribati are poor.

ATMs

Only 1-2 ATMs exist in South Tarawa (at ANZ Bank, Bairiki) and they frequently run out of cash or malfunction. Bring all the Australian dollars you will need in cash. Credit cards accepted only at major hotels.

Credit Cards

Visa accepted at Fema Lodge, Otintaai Hotel, and Nemat Resort only. Mastercard less widely accepted. Everywhere else is cash-only.

Tipping

Tipping is not traditional but is appreciated at tourist-facing restaurants (10%) and by guides and drivers ($5-10 for a half-day service).

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • International flights to Kiribati are expensive ($800-1500 AUD return from Australia/NZ/Fiji) and the biggest cost of any Kiribati trip
  • Imported food and drinks at hotels cost 2-3x Australian prices due to isolation and shipping costs
  • Outer island travel by Air Kiribati adds $120-400 AUD per trip depending on destination
  • WWII guide services ($30-80 AUD) are not always obvious to budget-first planners but greatly enhance the experience
  • Data/internet costs are extremely high — TSKL SIM data costs $20-50 AUD per gigabyte
  • Medical evacuation insurance is critical — nearest proper medical facilities are in Fiji or Australia; evacuation costs $30,000-100,000 AUD
  • Some outer island ferry services charge for luggage — confirm before travelling
  • Snorkelling and diving equipment rental ($5-15 AUD/day) is necessary as public rental is minimal
