Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Eat at local pastelarias for breakfast (pastel de atum $1-2, coffee $1) instead of hotel breakfast - saves $15-20 per day

💡

Use alugueres (shared minibuses) for local transport - they cost 100-500 CVE ($1-5) versus $10-20 for taxis

💡

Buy Fogo volcanic wine and artisanal grogue at supermarkets rather than restaurants - up to 50% cheaper than restaurant pricing

💡

Book inter-island flights through Binter CV directly at least 2 weeks ahead for promotional fares - last-minute flights are much more expensive

💡

Visit fish market stalls at lunch for the cheapest fresh seafood - whole grilled fish with rice costs $6-10 versus $20-35 at restaurants

💡

Many luxury hotel restaurants welcome non-guests - the Melia Dunas breakfast buffet (if offered externally) provides value for the quality

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Cape Verdean Escudo (CVE). Pegged 1:1 to Euro at 110.265 CVE = 1 EUR

Change euros at banks or official exchange offices - airport rates are worse. Some establishments accept euros directly at the fixed rate. USD is less useful.

ATMs

ATMs available in all main towns on major islands. Banco Interatlântico and Caixa Económica have most reliable machines. Rural islands and smaller villages may have no ATMs - carry cash.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and tourist shops. Many local restaurants, markets, and transport are cash only. Always carry some CVE or euros.

Tipping

10% at restaurants is standard and meaningful. Taxi: round up the fare. Guides: 500-1000 CVE ($5-10) for a good half-day. Beach vendors: tipping not expected.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • EASE registration fee when booking flights - around €40-50 per person required for entry
  • Tourist tax in some municipalities - small nightly charge at hotels not always included in booking price
  • Inter-island flights for island hopping - budget €50-120 per route and book well in advance
  • SIM card and data - local SIM €10-15 for 5GB, necessary for maps and communication
  • Ferry cancellation costs - rough seas November to March can cancel ferries, requiring expensive last-minute flight rebooking
  • Sunscreen imported from Europe costs €15-25 per bottle locally - bring sufficient supply from home
  • Luggage storage at airports is limited - plan itinerary to avoid needing it
