Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Use shared taxi-brousses instead of private taxis for all inter-town travel — they cost $0.50-2 compared to $15-40 for private hire

💡

Eat where locals eat — the canteens around Volo Volo Market serve enormous plates of rice, fish, and vegetables for $3-5, vastly cheaper than any restaurant

💡

Buy vanilla pods, ylang-ylang oil, and spices directly at Volo Volo Market rather than from hotel gift shops or tourist stores — prices can be 5-10x lower

💡

Stay in guesthouses (pensions) in residential areas of Moroni rather than resort hotels — options like Dar Salama and Pension Chez Ali offer clean rooms from $18-30

💡

Book domestic inter-island flights well in advance as prices rise sharply near departure on these limited-capacity aircraft

💡

Avoid eating at resort restaurants for regular meals — reserve these for special occasions and use local canteens for everyday eating

Walking the rural roads south of Moroni through ylang-ylang and vanilla plantations is free — the fragrance alone is worth the trip. Stop at small villages to observe the daily life of Comorian farming communities.

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Comorian Franc (KMF) — pegged to the Euro at approximately 492 KMF per 1 EUR

Exchange currency at Moroni's main banks (BIC Comores, Banque de Développement des Comores) for the best rates. Avoid airport exchange counters. The Euro is widely accepted at resort hotels.

ATMs

ATMs available at Moroni's main banks and at the airport. Withdrawals limited to approximately 50,000-100,000 KMF ($110-220) per transaction. ATMs often run out of cash on weekends — withdraw on weekdays.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at resort hotels and some larger restaurants. Cash is essential for markets, local transport, street food, and smaller businesses. Never rely solely on cards in Comoros.

Tipping

Tipping is not expected but warmly appreciated. 500-1,000 KMF ($1-2) for guides and drivers; round up taxi fares; 10% at restaurants where service charge is not included

  • Mohéli Marine Park entrance fee: $10 per person
