Currency

Qatari Riyal (QAR / QR). Pegged to USD at rate of 3.64 QAR = $1 USD since 2001.

The Qatari Riyal is pegged to the US dollar at 3.64 QAR to $1 - a fixed rate that doesn't fluctuate. Exchange at banks, Currency Exchange Offices in malls, or at the airport (marginally worse rates).

ATMs

ATMs widely available throughout Doha including Hamad International Airport (24/7), all major malls, and hotel lobbies. Major banks: QNB, Commercial Bank, HSBC. Standard withdrawal limit around 3,000 QAR per transaction.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted almost everywhere including taxis (Karwa requires card only). Amex accepted at 5-star hotels and fine dining. Traditional souqs and small cafeterias often cash-only.

Tipping

10-15% at restaurants (check if service charge already included). Taxi drivers appreciate rounding up. Hotel porters 5-10 QAR per bag. Room service tips 10-20 QAR.

  • Tourist entry fees - Qatar charges no visa fee for most nationalities but check current entry requirements
  • Hotel Wi-Fi - some budget hotels charge 50-100 QAR/day for internet despite claiming free Wi-Fi
  • Alcohol prices - significantly inflated at hotel bars due to import taxes (50-100 QAR per drink)
  • Mandatory car insurance for 4x4 desert rental covers basic liability but exclude dune driving damage
