Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

πŸ’‘

Angola is one of Africa's most expensive countries β€” budget carefully and accept that costs will be higher than elsewhere in the region

πŸ’‘

Eat at local market food stalls rather than restaurants β€” calulu, funge, and grilled fish at Kinaxixe market cost $3-5 versus $25+ at restaurants

πŸ’‘

Use Kubinga or Heetch ride-hailing apps instead of negotiating with street taxis β€” app fares are fixed and cheaper

πŸ’‘

Visit Kissama National Park on a self-drive basis rather than joining organized tours to significantly reduce safari costs

πŸ’‘

Shop for provisions at Shoprite (South African supermarket chain) or local markets rather than hotel shops and convenience stores

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Angolan Kwanza (AOA)

USD is widely accepted in hotels, upmarket restaurants, and for major transactions. Exchange at bank branches or official Bureau de Change; avoid street money changers

ATMs

ATMs (BFA, BCI, BAI banks) are available in Luanda malls and business districts but frequently run out of cash or have daily withdrawal limits of $200-300 equivalent

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at major hotels, upmarket restaurants, and Belas Shopping Mall. Many smaller establishments and markets are cash-only in Kwanza

Tipping

10-15% in restaurants, $1-2 per bag for porters, $5-10 per person for tour guides, rounding up for taxi drivers is appreciated

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Tourist visa fee ($60-80 depending on nationality, required in advance)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate mandatory for entry β€” vaccination and certificate costs
  • Mussulo Island boat transfers ($15-30 each way, not included in most activity prices)
  • Park entrance fees at Kissama ($25), Bicuar ($20), and Cangandala ($30)
  • Private security for accommodation β€” many mid-range stays in Luanda have security costs factored into room rates
