Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Use boda bodas (motorcycle taxis via SafeBoda app) for short trips within neighborhoods — 50-80% cheaper than car taxis

💡

Eat where local Ugandans eat — matoke, groundnut stew, and posho at local restaurants costs $3-5 versus $15-25 at tourist restaurants

💡

Book gorilla permits directly with Uganda Wildlife Authority (uwa.go.ug) rather than through agents to avoid markup fees

💡

Travel overland by bus between cities rather than domestic flights — Kampala to Kabale by Jaguar Coach costs $12-15 vs $150+ by air

💡

Visit national parks on shorter 2-day trips from Kampala rather than multi-day lodges to save significantly on accommodation

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Ugandan Shilling (UGX)

USD, EUR, and GBP can be exchanged at forex bureaus (better rates than banks). Avoid airport exchange for large amounts — use forex bureaus in Kampala city centre

ATMs

ATMs widely available at banks and malls in Kampala. Stanbic, Centenary Bank, and Barclays ATMs most reliable. Withdraw larger amounts to minimize transaction fees. ATMs outside Kampala can be unreliable.

Credit Cards

Visa accepted at larger hotels, supermarkets, and some restaurants. Mastercard less widely accepted. Cash preferred for markets, taxis, and local restaurants.

Tipping

10-15% at restaurants in tourist areas; $5-10/day for safari guides and gorilla trekking porters; $3-5 for hotel staff

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Uganda gorilla permit ($800/person) and chimpanzee permit ($200) are major items to budget separately
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry — cost of vaccination and certificate varies by country
  • Ugandan e-visa or visa on arrival: $50 single entry, $100 multiple entry
  • Park entry fees add up: UWA parks charge $40/day for international visitors on top of activity fees
  • Tipping culture for guides and porters — $10-15/day per guide is expected on gorilla and chimpanzee treks
