Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Travel during the low season (March-May, November) for 30-50% lower accommodation rates. Wildlife is still present in parks and beaches are quieter.

💡

Eat at local Tanzanian restaurants (hotelis) rather than tourist restaurants for meals under $3. Ugali, pilau, and chapati fill you up cheaply.

💡

Book Kilimanjaro treks directly with Arusha-based operators rather than through international tour companies to save 20-40%.

💡

Use dalla-dalla minibuses for local transport in Dar es Salaam and Stone Town for under $0.50 per ride instead of taxis.

💡

Ferry to Zanzibar is $35-40 (2 hours) - far cheaper than flying ($80-120). Book at the Dar ferry terminal directly to avoid commission.

💡

Self-catering in Zanzibar beach guesthouses with kitchen access can reduce food costs significantly - buy fish and produce at Darajani Market.

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Tanzanian Shilling (TZS)

USD is widely accepted in tourist areas, parks, and hotels. Exchange TZS at banks or forex bureaus in cities - avoid airport rates which are 10-15% worse. Don't exchange on the street.

ATMs

ATMs widely available in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Stone Town. CRDB and NMB banks have most ATMs. Some ATMs accept Visa only. Carry cash when travelling to rural areas and parks.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at hotels, upscale restaurants, and shops in cities. Limited acceptance in rural areas and local markets. Always carry TZS cash as backup.

Tipping

10-15% at tourist restaurants. Safari guides $15-20/day, porters on Kilimanjaro $10/day, lodge staff $5-10/day. Tipping not expected at local Tanzanian restaurants.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • National park entry fees ($70-100/day for Serengeti, $60/day for Ngorongoro) add up fast on multi-day safaris
  • Mandatory park conservation fees of $60/person/day in Ngorongoro Crater
  • Tourist visa ($50 online e-visa, required for most nationalities) on arrival
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate required for entry ($30-80 to obtain)
  • Kilimanjaro porters, guides, and permits can add $200-800 to your stated trek price
  • Zanzibar ferry port tax ($5 each way not included in ticket price)
  • Resort service charges (10-15% added to restaurant and bar bills at major hotels)
