Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Swazi Lilangeni (SZL/E), plural Emalangeni. Pegged at 1:1 with South African Rand (ZAR).

South African Rand is accepted at par everywhere in Eswatini. Use ATMs in Mbabane or Manzini for best rates. Avoid airport currency exchange bureaux with poor rates.

ATMs

FNB, Standard Bank, and Nedbank ATMs are widely available in Mbabane and Manzini. ATMs dispense both Lilangeni and Rand. Rural areas have no ATMs - carry cash when venturing to reserves.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and fuel stations. Many small vendors, markets, and rural lodges are cash only. Always carry some cash.

Tipping

10-15% at restaurants if service charge not included. $5-10 per guide per game drive. $1-2 per bag for hotel porters. Small tips appreciated by craft market vendors even if not purchasing.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Tourist entry fees at nature reserves ($5-10/person) add up quickly if visiting multiple parks
  • Vehicle entry fees at game reserves on top of person fees ($5-8 per vehicle)
  • Malaria prophylaxis medication if visiting eastern lowveld reserves ($20-40 for a course)
  • International departure tax included in airfares but verify when booking through budget carriers
  • Mobile data costs if relying on international roaming - buy local SIM to avoid
  • Fuel costs if hiring a car - petrol stations less common in rural areas
  • Camera/video fees at some cultural sites and ceremonies
