Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Rent a car rather than relying on taxis for day trips - a €20-35/day economy rental covers entire day excursions that would cost €150+ in taxis

💡

Eat where locals eat - tavernas in residential neighborhoods serve better food at half the price of harbor and tourist-area restaurants

💡

Buy fresh produce and halloumi at local markets (especially Saturday morning markets) for self-catering; supermarket prices are competitive with southern Europe

💡

Visit museums and archaeological sites on the first Sunday of the month for free admission

💡

Book accommodation in Nicosia and use the city as a hub with day trips - Nicosia hotels are 30-50% cheaper than coastal resort hotels

💡

Look for package deals combining accommodation and car rental, which often undercut booking separately

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Euro (€, EUR)

Cyprus uses the Euro; no currency exchange needed for eurozone visitors. For others, exchange at banks or use ATMs which offer better rates than hotel exchanges or tourist area kiosks.

ATMs

ATMs (cash machines) are widely available throughout Cyprus in cities, tourist areas, and airports. Most accept Visa and Mastercard without issues. Typical ATM withdrawal limit is €300 per transaction.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. American Express has limited acceptance. Contactless payment is standard. Small local tavernas and markets may be cash-only.

Tipping

Not obligatory but appreciated: 10-15% at restaurants where service not included, round up for taxi fares, €1-2/day for hotel housekeeping. Never expected to tip at cafes for counter service.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Tourist tax on accommodation: €0-7 per room per night depending on hotel category
  • Car rental insurance: mandatory basic insurance included but full coverage recommended at €8-15/day extra
  • SIM card for data: €15-25 for a local SIM with 20GB data (much cheaper than roaming charges)
  • Beach sunbed hire: €5-12 per person per day at resort beaches - can add up significantly over a week
  • Airport transfer: budget hotels may not be near public transport - taxi from Larnaca to Limassol costs €60-70
  • Luggage storage at airports: €3-6 per bag per day if needed for late flights
