Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Cambodian Riel (KHR) and US Dollar (USD)

US dollars are the de facto currency throughout Cambodia and are accepted everywhere. Riel is used for small change β€” $1 = approximately 4,100 Riel. Avoid changing money at airports.

ATMs

ATMs widely available in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. ACLEDA Bank and Canadia Bank ATMs have the lowest fees. $5 fee common on foreign withdrawals.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. Small markets and street food are cash only. Carry small USD bills.

Tipping

Not mandatory but appreciated: $1-2 at restaurants, $1 for tuk-tuk drivers, $1-2/day for hotel staff. Angkor guides and spa therapists appreciate $3-5 tips.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Angkor Pass ($37-72) is the largest single expense β€” budget this in advance
  • Island ferry transfers ($25-35 each way) add up for coastal travel
  • Tourist visas on arrival cost $30 for 30 days β€” get an e-visa online beforehand at the same price to avoid queues
  • Overstaying a visa incurs $10/day fine payable at the airport
  • SIM card and data plan $5-15 for a month of decent data coverage
