Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Euro (€)

Latvia joined the Eurozone in 2014 — no currency exchange needed for EU visitors. Prices are in euros throughout.

ATMs

ATMs are widely available throughout Riga and major cities. Use bank ATMs (Swedbank, SEB, Citadele) to avoid independent ATM fees. Most charge no fees for EU cards.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted almost everywhere including small shops and market stalls. Contactless payment is standard. Cash is rarely needed but useful for market vendors.

Tipping

10-15% at restaurants is expected in Riga. Round up for taxis. Not required at cafes.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Riga City Tourist Tax: €1.50/person/night in most hotels (max 3 nights)
  • Luggage storage at Riga Central Station €3-5/day
  • Paid tourist entry to Jurmala city center by car: €2 day pass in summer
  • SIM card for data: Tele2 or LMT prepaid from €10 for 10GB
  • Museum photography permits (some museums charge €1-3 extra for photography)
