Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Euro (EUR, €)

Euro is used throughout Luxembourg and the surrounding Greater Region (France, Belgium, Germany). Exchange USD/GBP to Euro before arrival or at airport. Bank rates are better than airport exchange offices.

ATMs

ATMs (Bankomaten) are widely available throughout Luxembourg City and all major towns. POST Luxembourg ATMs are most reliable. Major banks including BGL BNP Paribas, Spuerkeess, and Banque Raiffeisen have widespread ATM networks.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted almost universally. American Express accepted at most hotels and upscale restaurants. Contactless payment widespread. Some traditional cafes and markets are cash-only — keep €20-50 in cash for small purchases.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. Round up the bill or add 10% at restaurants. Taxi drivers appreciate rounding to the nearest euro. Bars: leave change from your round. Hotel housekeeping: €1-2/day is considerate.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Accommodation is among Europe's most expensive — budget €35+/night minimum even for hostel beds
  • Tourist tax (taxe de sejour) of €2-4/night may be added to hotel bills
  • Parking in Luxembourg City center is expensive at €2-4/hour — use free Park & Ride facilities with free tram into center
  • Restaurant meals are uniformly expensive — budget restaurants start at €12-15 for a main course
  • International calls and data roaming if using a non-EU SIM — get a Luxembourg POST or Tango SIM for €15-20
  • Luggage storage at Luxembourg Gare Centrale: €3-5/item/day
  • Entry fees to Vianden Castle (€9), Bock Casemates (€8), and premium attractions add up — use Luxembourg City Card for savings
