Official sources should be the basis of any assessment of a destination. Your own government's travel advice, the relevant embassy or consulate, and local authority announcements are the appropriate places to check entry requirements, health notices and current conditions, and they should be consulted close to departure as well as when planning. These guides are organised by destination and are intended as background reading rather than as an assessment of present-day conditions anywhere.

Preparation carries most of the weight. Arrange travel insurance that matches what you actually intend to do, including any driving, altitude or water activities, and read the exclusions. Keep copies of your passport, insurance policy and prescriptions somewhere separate from the originals, note the local emergency number, and leave an outline of your plans with someone at home. Carrying money and cards in more than one place limits the consequences of losing either.

Day to day, the habits that help are unremarkable ones. Keep valuables out of sight in crowded places and on public transport, be deliberate about how you travel late at night, take licensed transport, and treat unexpected approaches, distractions and unusually convenient offers with ordinary caution. Health basics matter as much as security: know what the local advice on drinking water and food is, and find out how you would reach a pharmacy or clinic.
