Safety Overview
Chon Buri province, including Pattaya, is generally safe for tourists, with an active Tourist Police presence and ongoing anti-scam campaigns. Exercise normal caution regarding common tourist scams, road safety and personal belongings, particularly in crowded entertainment areas at night.
Chon Buri is a coastal province on Thailand's Eastern Seaboard, best known for the resort city of Pattaya and its string of sun-drenched beaches along the Gulf of Thailand. The province blends vibrant beach tourism with industrial heritage, traditional fishing villages, and lush tropical landscapes just 80 km from Bangkok.
Current Advisory
Thailand is rated Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) by the US State Department for most regions including Chon Buri. Standard tourist precautions apply β Pattaya's entertainment district warrants extra alertness at night. No specific security incidents affect Chon Buri province.

Common Scams to Avoid
Be aware of these common tourist scams.
Jet Ski Damage Scam
Renting a jet ski then being charged for pre-existing damage that was present before your rental
Gem / Jewelry Scam
Stranger offers a 'once-in-a-lifetime' gem deal; overpriced or fake stones sold for huge sums
Taxi Overcharging
Unlicensed or unmetered taxis quote 5-10x the fair rate to tourists unfamiliar with local prices
Tuk-Tuk 'Temple Closed' Scam
Driver says attraction is closed and offers to take you to a 'special shop' instead where he earns commission
Fake Travel Agency
Companies sell non-existent tour packages or boat trips and disappear with money
Bar Bill Inflation
Overcharging for drinks or adding items you didn't order to the bill at entertainment venues
Essential Safety Tips
Practical advice for staying safe during your trip.
Always agree on taxi fares before boarding or use Grab app to avoid overcharging
Photograph jet skis and beach loungers before renting to document pre-existing damage β scam claims are common
Keep valuables secured in hotel safes; pickpockets operate in crowded Walking Street and night markets
Use only licensed songthaews (blue shared trucks) on established routes rather than private charters at tourist spots
Avoid buying gems or jewelry from strangers who approach you with 'special promotions' β a classic Thai scam
Do not accept rides or tours from unsolicited street touts outside attractions
Swim only at patrolled beaches; red flags mean dangerous currents β respect them strictly
Apply sun protection factor 50+ sunscreen β the equatorial sun causes severe burns within 30 minutes
Carry a photocopy of your passport rather than the original when out sightseeing
Stay hydrated β heat exhaustion is a real risk, especially MayβOctober; drink 2β3 liters daily
Be cautious on rented motorcycles β Thailand has one of the world's highest road accident rates; wear a helmet
Do not purchase or use drugs β penalties in Thailand are severe and include the death penalty for trafficking
Respect temple rules: cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes, and do not point feet toward Buddha images
Tourist Police are helpful and English-speaking β call 1155 if in any difficulty
Walking Street is safe but alcohol-fueled incidents occur; stay in groups and keep mobile phones charged
Safety by Traveler Type
Solo Travelers
Chon Buri is generally fine for solo travelers of all genders. Pattaya's entertainment district has a lively but occasionally rough edge at night β stay in well-lit areas, don't flash expensive items and keep mobile data available. Solo female travelers should take standard precautions on Walking Street after midnight. Si Racha and Bang Saen are very safe and low-key.
Female Travelers
Generally safe with normal precautions. Dress modestly outside beach and resort areas. Avoid isolated areas at night. The tourist resort areas of Pattaya and Jomtien have good lighting and police patrols. Harassment from street touts can occur β a firm 'mai ow' (don't want) is effective.
Families
Chon Buri is a family-friendly destination. Jomtien Beach and the resort areas of North Pattaya are calmer than the central strip. Keep children away from Walking Street. Khao Kheow Zoo, Nong Nooch Garden and Columbia Aquaverse are ideal family venues with excellent safety standards.
LGBTQ+ Travelers
Thailand is one of Southeast Asia's most LGBTQ-friendly countries. Same-sex relationships are legal and widely accepted, especially in Pattaya. The city has a very visible LGBTQ community. Tiffany's and Alcazar cabaret shows celebrate transgender culture. Public displays of affection are generally fine in tourist areas.
Health & Medical
Stay healthy during your trip.
Vaccinations
Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus. Consider Japanese Encephalitis for rural areas and Rabies for animal-heavy areas near zoos. Malaria not a risk in Chon Buri.
Water Safety
Do not drink tap water anywhere in Chon Buri; bottled water is widely available and costs 7-15 THB per 1.5L bottle from convenience stores
Food Safety
Cooked street food is generally safe; avoid raw shellfish from questionable sources; wash hands before eating at markets. Ice in tourist areas is usually from purified water.
Medical Facilities
Bangkok Pattaya Hospital and Pattaya International Hospital provide international-standard care. Most resort hotels have in-house medical clinics. Pharmacies (marked with a green cross) are abundant and can treat minor issues.
Medication Tips
- Bring enough prescription medication for your entire trip plus extra
- Keep medications in original containers with pharmacy labels
- Carry a letter from your doctor explaining your medications
- Some medications may be restricted - research before traveling
- Pack basic medications: pain relievers, anti-diarrheal, antihistamines
