Common Scams to Avoid
Be aware of these common tourist scams.
Taxi overcharging
Unlicensed taxis at Luxembourg Airport or outside major hotels may charge inflated flat rates not using the meter. Rare but reported occasionally.
Fake begging at tourist sites
Organized begging networks occasionally operate near Bock Casemates, Place Guillaume II, and the main train station, sometimes using children. Uncommon compared to larger European cities but present.
Overpriced tourist restaurants
Some restaurants on Place d'Armes and near Bock Casemates charge significantly above local norms for tourist convenience. Not technically a scam but poor value.
Essential Safety Tips
Practical advice for staying safe during your trip.
Watch for pickpockets on trains, especially to/from Brussels
Beware of bag snatching and theft from vehicles in tourist areas
Exercise caution on highways during morning/evening rush hours
Be careful driving in fall/winter due to fog and ice
Keep valuables secured on public transport despite free service
Demonstrations are typically small, organized and non-violent
Luxembourg City is generally very safe, but stay alert in the Gare district at night where petty theft can occur Γ’β¬β keep bags secure and stay in well-lit areas.
Register with your home country's embassy or consulate for extended stays. The US Embassy is in the Belair district: +352 46 01 23.
Luxembourg's free public transport means you never need unlicensed taxis Γ’β¬β always use the official Webtaxi app or authorised services to avoid overcharging.
Cycling is well-facilitated but always use dedicated bike lanes; electric scooters require the same road rules as cyclists and fines for violations are steep.
Safety by Traveler Type
Solo Travelers
Luxembourg is excellent for solo travelers of all genders. Luxembourg City is walkable and very safe at night in the old town, Grund, and Clausen. The Gare district at night warrants standard urban awareness. The free public transport network makes it very easy to get around independently. Emergency services are responsive and English is widely spoken.
Female Travelers
Luxembourg is very safe for women traveling alone. Harassment is uncommon by European standards and the country has strong legal protections. Night transport is safe and well-lit. The free taxi app Webtaxi is available 24/7 if walking feels uncomfortable late at night. All nightlife areas are generally safe with security at clubs.
Families
Luxembourg is extremely family-friendly with excellent child safety infrastructure, clean well-maintained public spaces, and attractions designed for families. Free public transport means no car safety concerns. Most restaurants welcome children. Medical facilities for children (CHL pediatric unit) are modern and excellent.
LGBTQ+ Travelers
Luxembourg is one of Europe's most LGBTQ+ friendly countries. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2015, adoption rights are equal, and anti-discrimination protections are comprehensive. Luxembourg City has an active LGBTQ+ scene centered on the Gare district and Clausen. The Pride Luxembourg festival takes place annually in July. Visibility is high and acceptance is widespread across all demographics.
