Common Scams to Avoid
Be aware of these common tourist scams.
Unlicensed taxi
Some unlicensed private car drivers pose as taxi drivers near the airport and tourist areas.
Timeshare and property touts
Aggressive timeshare promoters operate in some tourist areas offering 'free gifts' to attend presentations.
Currency exchange scams
Some informal exchange kiosks at street level offer rates that seem better but add hidden fees.
Overpriced souk goods
Some Gold and Spice Souk vendors quote inflated starting prices to tourists.
Essential Safety Tips
Practical advice for staying safe during your trip.
Dubai is one of the world's safest cities β violent crime is extremely rare and petty crime is uncommon. However, common sense precautions always apply.
Carry a water bottle and apply SPF 50+ sunscreen when outdoors from April to October. Summer heat (40-45Β°C) poses a genuine health risk including heat stroke.
Public intoxication is illegal in Dubai. Alcohol may only be consumed within licensed hotel venues, designated bars, and private spaces.
Dress modestly outside of beach, resort, and pool areas. Cover shoulders and knees in shopping malls, souks, and public streets.
Public displays of affection between unmarried couples are frowned upon and can attract police attention. Hold hands but avoid kissing in public.
Photography of government buildings, military installations, palaces, and some bridges is prohibited. Always ask permission before photographing local people.
Jaywalking is illegal and carries on-the-spot fines. Always use pedestrian crossings and obey traffic signals.
Only use licensed RTA cream taxis or verified ride-hailing apps (Careem/Uber). Never get into an unmarked vehicle.
Keep copies of your passport and travel insurance documents in a separate bag from your originals.
During Ramadan, eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is illegal and can result in detention. This applies to non-Muslims as well.
Possession or use of illegal drugs carries severe penalties including lengthy prison sentences and deportation. This includes CBD products and some medications β check the UAEDT drug list before travelling.
Swearing, using rude gestures, or showing anger in public β including on social media directed at UAE institutions β can result in arrest and prosecution.
Car rental drivers should note that speeding penalties are severe and speed cameras are ubiquitous. The legal alcohol limit for driving is zero.
Women can travel alone safely in Dubai. Use metro women-only carriages, solo-female taxis (pink taxis), and well-lit areas at night for maximum comfort.
Keep emergency contacts including the Dubai Police Tourist Support number (800-DUBAI) saved on your phone.
Safety by Traveler Type
Solo Travelers
Dubai is extremely safe for solo travellers. The metro and buses are well-lit and monitored. Solo dining and sightseeing carry no concerns. Keep emergency numbers saved, dress modestly in public, and be aware of cultural norms around alcohol and public behaviour.
Female Travelers
Dubai is one of the safest destinations in the world for solo female travellers. Women are treated respectfully and harassment is rare. Pink taxis (exclusively female drivers for female passengers) are available through the RTA app. The metro has dedicated women-and-children carriages. Dress modestly outside beaches and resort areas.
Families
Excellent destination for families. Child safety standards are high, public spaces are family-oriented, and many attractions cater specifically to children. Pushchair/stroller access is generally good in malls and modern areas. Medical facilities are world-class.
LGBTQ+ Travelers
Same-sex relationships are illegal under UAE law and can carry criminal penalties. Dubai is more tolerant in practice than some UAE reports suggest, and LGBTQ+ tourists are welcomed economically, but public displays of affection or open discussion of LGBTQ+ identity carry risk. Discretion is strongly advised. Same-sex couples should research their specific risk tolerance before visiting.
Health & Medical
Stay healthy during your trip.
Vaccinations
No specific vaccinations required for UAE entry from most countries. Routine vaccinations (hepatitis A/B, typhoid) recommended. Yellow Fever certificate required if arriving from endemic countries.
Water Safety
Tap water is desalinated and technically safe but most visitors prefer bottled water for taste reasons. Bottled water is cheap and widely available.
Food Safety
Food safety standards in Dubai are extremely high. Street food from busy stalls is generally safe. Raw seafood is best eaten at established restaurants.
Medical Facilities
Dubai has world-class hospitals and clinics. Dubai Hospital, Mediclinic, and American Hospital are highly regarded. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended as treatment costs are high.
Medication Tips
- Bring enough prescription medication for your entire trip plus extra
- Keep medications in original containers with pharmacy labels
- Carry a letter from your doctor explaining your medications
- Some medications may be restricted - research before traveling
- Pack basic medications: pain relievers, anti-diarrheal, antihistamines
