Qatar Safety Guide 2025
Stay safe during your Qatar trip with essential safety information.
Safety Overview
Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world for travelers with extremely low rates of violent crime and an efficient police force. The main risks are related to traffic accidents, extreme summer heat, and legal issues arising from cultural misunderstandings rather than criminal activity.
Qatar is a dynamic Arabian Peninsula nation blending futuristic skyscrapers with traditional souqs and Islamic heritage. From the architectural masterpieces of Doha to the serene inland sea and pristine beaches, Qatar offers world-class museums, luxury resorts, and authentic cultural experiences in one of the world's most rapidly developing destinations.
Current Advisory
Exercise normal precautions. Qatar has very low crime rates and strong law enforcement. Be aware of strict local laws regarding alcohol, public behavior, dress codes, and photography restrictions.

Common Scams to Avoid
Be aware of these common tourist scams.
Unofficial taxi overcharging
Unlicensed drivers at the airport and popular tourist areas may offer rides at inflated prices, sometimes 3-5x the normal fare. They may not use meters.
Fake goods at souq
Counterfeit designer goods (watches, bags, perfume) are sold in some souq shops at prices that seem cheap but are still overpriced for fakes.
Currency exchange scams
Some street-level money changers short-change customers or use sleight of hand to give incorrect amounts. Rates at these outlets are often worse than official exchange counters.
Essential Safety Tips
Practical advice for staying safe during your trip.
Respect Islamic customs and dress modestly in public areas - women should cover shoulders and knees, men avoid sleeveless shirts
Avoid public displays of affection - kissing or hugging in public is illegal and can result in fines or detention
Do not photograph government buildings, military installations, or people without explicit permission
Alcohol is only available in licensed hotels and restaurants - never bring alcohol into the country
Register with your embassy or enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) for security updates
Emergency services (999) operate 24/7 in multiple languages including English
Carry your passport or a copy at all times - police can request ID documentation
During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours - this applies to all visitors
Qatar has strict drug laws - even trace amounts of substances can lead to severe penalties including imprisonment
Women traveling solo are generally safe; use licensed Karwa taxis or Uber/Careem rather than accepting lifts from strangers
Be cautious of heatstroke May-September when temperatures exceed 45C - stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity midday
Dress code at Doha shopping malls is enforced - modest clothing required, security will turn away inappropriately dressed visitors
LGBTQ+ relationships are illegal in Qatar - exercise extreme discretion and be aware of local laws
Safety by Traveler Type
Solo Travelers
Qatar is excellent for solo travelers of all genders. Crime against tourists is extremely rare. The Doha Metro, Uber, and hotel areas are all very safe at any hour. Solo travelers should still respect dress codes, avoid photographing restricted areas, and be aware that certain behaviors legal elsewhere (public affection, alcohol outside hotel premises) are restricted.
Female Travelers
Qatar is one of the safest destinations for female solo travelers in the region. Women can walk alone at night in most areas without harassment. Use licensed taxis or ride apps rather than accepting lifts from strangers. Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) in public areas. Sexual harassment is relatively rare and taken seriously by police. Women traveling alone should be aware that some traditional establishments may be less welcoming.
Families
Qatar is extremely family-friendly with world-class facilities, safe streets, excellent healthcare, and a culture that is very welcoming of children. All major attractions and malls are designed for families. The main considerations are the extreme summer heat (plan outdoor activities carefully) and ensuring children understand modest dress requirements at traditional sites.
LGBTQ+ Travelers
Same-sex relationships are illegal in Qatar under Sharia law and can result in imprisonment or deportation. LGBTQ+ travelers should exercise extreme discretion and avoid any public displays of affection. Qatar received LGBTQ+ visitors during the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a general policy of tolerance for tourists, but the legal situation has not changed. LGBTQ+ travelers should carefully consider risks and travel with awareness of local laws.
Health & Medical
Stay healthy during your trip.
Vaccinations
No vaccinations required for most travelers. Routine vaccines (MMR, Hepatitis A/B) recommended. Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from endemic countries. COVID-19 requirements may vary - check current regulations.
Water Safety
Tap water is safe to drink and meets international standards. Desalinated seawater throughout Qatar. Bottled water widely available and inexpensive (2-5 QAR per liter).
