People approach tourists in Times Square and hand them a 'free' CD or friendship bracelet, then aggressively demand payment

How to avoid: Decline any unsolicited gifts or items from strangers on the street

Three-Card Monte / Shell Game

Street gambling games rigged so tourists never win, often surrounded by accomplices posing as other gamblers

How to avoid: Never participate in street gambling games β€” they are illegal and always rigged

At JFK and tourist areas, unlicensed drivers pose as taxi services and charge dramatically inflated fares

How to avoid: Only use official yellow cabs (metered), Uber, Lyft, or official airport car services
⚠️

Fake Monk Solicitation

People in orange robes approach tourists and offer 'free' beads or medallions, then demand a donation aggressively

Essential Safety Tips

Practical advice for staying safe during your trip.

INFO

Keep valuables (phone, wallet, camera) secured and out of sight on the NYC subway and in crowded tourist areas like Times Square and Times Square

INFO

Always use official NYC yellow cabs, Uber, or Lyft β€” never accept rides from unlicensed cars or strangers approaching you in tourist zones

INFO

Dial 911 for police, fire, or medical emergencies anywhere in New York State

INFO

NYC has a non-emergency police line: 311 β€” use this for non-urgent concerns rather than calling 911

INFO

Be aware of common scams targeting tourists: shell games and three-card monte on the street, fake 'CD gifts' in Times Square, and unofficial 'tour guides' at major attractions

INFO

In winter, watch for black ice on sidewalks throughout the state β€” ice is often invisible and forms overnight after freezing temperatures

INFO

When hiking in the Adirondacks or Catskills, tell someone your planned route and expected return time; cell service is limited or absent in many wilderness areas

INFO

Carry bear spray or use bear canisters when camping overnight in the Adirondacks β€” black bears are common and should never be fed

INFO

In summer, check for ticks after hiking or walking through tall grass anywhere in New York State; Lyme disease risk is significant in the Hudson Valley and Long Island

INFO

Swim only at beaches with lifeguards on duty β€” rip currents can be dangerous on Long Island's Atlantic-facing beaches

INFO

Lock car doors and don't leave valuables visible inside rental cars, especially in city areas or at trailheads

INFO

New York City's subway is safe at all hours but stay alert in less-trafficked stations and avoid empty cars late at night

INFO

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for international visitors β€” US medical care is extremely expensive without coverage

INFO

In severe weather (blizzards, nor'easters, hurricanes), follow guidance from New York State emergency management and avoid unnecessary travel

INFO

Know your hotel or accommodation address and have it written down β€” cell service can be disrupted in emergencies

Safety by Traveler Type

Solo

Solo Travelers

New York State is excellent for solo travelers. NYC's density and 24/7 activity make it one of the safest solo destinations in the world. Tips: stick to well-lit and populated areas late at night, let someone know your plans when hiking in wilderness areas, and be aware of your surroundings on the subway particularly late at night.

Women

Female Travelers

New York City ranks among the best major cities globally for female solo travelers. The city has a strong culture of bystander intervention and is generally very safe. Tips: use Uber/Lyft rather than standing on dark street corners for taxis, trust your instincts in any uncomfortable situation, and note that the NYPD has specific resources for reporting harassment.

Family

Families

Excellent family destination throughout the state. NYC has endless family-friendly activities, good medical facilities, and is set up for families with strollers. Upstate, be aware of hiking distances and difficulty appropriate for children's ages. Bear awareness is important when camping with children in the Adirondacks.

LGBTQ+

LGBTQ+ Travelers

New York State has among the strongest LGBTQ+ legal protections in the United States. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2011 (three years before the federal ruling). NYC's Greenwich Village is the historic birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement and remains a welcoming hub. The annual NYC Pride March in June is one of the world's largest. The state overall is very safe and welcoming for LGBTQ+ travelers.

Health & Medical

Stay healthy during your trip.

Vaccinations

No specific vaccinations required for US citizens visiting NY; international visitors should ensure routine vaccines (MMR, Tdap, flu) are current

Water Safety

Tap water is safe to drink throughout New York State; NYC water supply from the Catskill/Delaware watershed is exceptionally clean

Food Safety

Restaurant food safety is well-regulated; standard hygiene caution applies for street food β€” look for busy, reputable vendors

Medical Facilities

World-class hospitals and medical facilities throughout the state; NYC alone has dozens of major hospital systems. NewYork-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai, and NYU Langone are among the best in the world. Urgent care clinics available throughout the state.
