Safety Overview
Armenia is one of the safest countries in the Caucasus for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is very rare and petty crime is low compared to European destinations. The main safety concerns are traffic (aggressive driving), border areas near Azerbaijan, and earthquake risk. Yerevan is particularly safe with visitors frequently commenting on how unthreatening the environment feels even at night.

Taxi Overcharging
Unlicensed taxis at Zvartnots Airport and Yerevan train station approach tourists offering rides at apparently reasonable prices but dramatically inflate the final fare. Some metered taxis also manipulate meters.
Currency Exchange Scams
Street money changers in tourist areas may offer attractive rates but use sleight of hand to shortchange tourists. Some exchange offices in tourist areas may display favorable rates and charge hidden fees.
Vernissage Antique Overpricing
Some vendors at Vernissage Market present items as authentic Armenian antiques when they are modern reproductions. Items described as 'very old' may be recently made. Genuine antiques have export restrictions.

Keep emergency numbers readily available

Register with your country's embassy or consulate upon arrival — Armenia's emergency services are efficient but embassy registration ensures rapid consular support in serious incidents
Avoid all areas within 5km of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border — the Tavush and Gegharkunik border regions have experienced sporadic incidents and remain sensitive; check your government's travel advisory before visiting Dilijan near border areas
Carry a colour photocopy of your passport at all times — Armenian police conduct routine document checks, particularly in border provinces, and having a copy means your original stays safely in the hotel safe
Dress modestly when visiting monasteries and churches — women should cover their heads with a scarf and wear skirts or trousers below the knee; scarves are usually available at entrances but having your own is more hygienic
Watch for pickpockets at Vernissage Market on weekend mornings — the market draws large crowds and opportunistic theft, though rare, does occur; use a money belt and don't keep valuables in rear pockets
Use only Yandex Taxi or GG Taxi apps for transport — unlicensed street taxis near the train station and airport have been known to significantly overcharge tourists; the app displays the price upfront
Never drink and drive — Armenia has zero tolerance for alcohol and driving, with serious penalties including immediate detention

Solo Travelers
Armenia is very safe for solo travelers of any gender. Yerevan's streets are active until late at night and solo travelers rarely encounter problems. The Armenian people are famously hospitable and helpful to visitors. Solo female travelers consistently rate Armenia as one of the most comfortable solo travel destinations in the region.
Female Travelers
Armenia is generally safe for women traveling alone. Harassment is uncommon and significantly less prevalent than in many surrounding countries. Dress conservatively outside of Yerevan tourist areas and around religious sites. At night, use Yandex or GG taxi apps rather than walking long distances alone. In rural areas, modest dress is appreciated.
Families
Armenia is an excellent family destination. The culture is very child-friendly — Armenians adore children and families are welcomed everywhere. Most roads to main attractions are good quality. Children's admission is usually discounted or free at museums. The main family consideration is heat in summer and the distance/roughness of roads to more remote sites.
LGBTQ+ Travelers
Same-sex relationships are legal in Armenia but not publicly accepted by mainstream society. Public displays of affection may attract negative attention. Yerevan's tech and arts communities tend to be more open-minded. There are a small number of LGBTQ-friendly venues in Yerevan but no established gay district. Discretion is advisable outside progressive urban circles. The situation is significantly more tolerant than neighboring countries.

Routine vaccines (MMR, DPT, etc.), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B (for long stays), Typhoid (if visiting rural areas), Rabies (if extensive outdoor activities)
Water Safety
Generally safe to drink in Yerevan. Bottled water recommended in rural areas and for sensitive stomachs. Many public drinking fountains with mountain spring water throughout the city.
Food Safety
Food safety is generally good at restaurants. Be cautious with raw salads at very cheap establishments. Street food is generally safe if hot and freshly prepared. Wash fruit and vegetables.
Medical Facilities
Yerevan has modern hospitals including Erebuni Medical Center and Muratsan University Hospital with English-speaking staff. Medical care quality is reasonable in the capital. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage strongly recommended.

- Bring enough prescription medication for your entire trip plus extra
- Keep medications in original containers with pharmacy labels
- Carry a letter from your doctor explaining your medications
- Some medications may be restricted - research before traveling
