Adventure travel is governed less by ambition than by conditions. The same route can be a straightforward day out in one month and a technical undertaking in another, and the deciding factors are usually snowmelt, monsoon timing, river levels and daylight. Before committing to an activity, work out the destination's operating season rather than its tourist season; the two rarely align, and shoulder months often bring good conditions with fewer people.

Compare operators on the things that are hard to change once you have arrived: group size, the ratio of guides to guests, the body that guides are accredited under, and whether equipment is included or rented locally. Ask what the cancellation policy looks like when weather closes a route, since that is the most common reason plans collapse. Insurance is the other frequent gap, as many standard travel policies exclude altitude above a stated ceiling, diving below a set depth, and anything described as a competition.

Fitness requirements are often published in vague terms, so translate them into numbers: hours on foot per day, cumulative ascent, pack weight and the altitude at which you will sleep. Acclimatisation days are not padding. Where a trip depends on permits, whether for trekking peaks, national parks or protected reefs, the permit calendar rather than your own sets the shape of the itinerary.
