Western Australia Adventure Activities Guide 2025

Discover thrilling outdoor activities and adventure experiences in Western Australia.

Western Australia is Australia's largest state, covering more than one-third of the continent and offering an extraordinary range of landscapes from pristine coral reefs and red outback deserts to verdant wine regions and cosmopolitan coastal cities. Home to Perth, one of the world's most isolated yet vibrant capital cities, Western Australia rewards adventurous travellers with World Heritage sites, unique wildlife, and some of the planet's most spectacular natural wonders.

Top Adventure Experiences

The most exciting activities Western Australia has to offer.

1

Whale Shark Snorkelling — Ningaloo Reef

Easy (basic swimming ability required)

One of the world's top wildlife experiences — swimming alongside the world's largest fish at the pristine Ningaloo Reef. Licensed tour operators use spotter aircraft to locate whale sharks, then guide participants into the water for in-water swims beside these gentle giants (up to 12 metres long). A life-altering wildlife experience available only at Ningaloo.

2

Surfing Lessons — Scarborough and Margaret River

Beginner to Expert

Western Australia has some of Australia's finest surfing, from Perth's accessible metro beaches (Scarborough, Trigg) to the powerful world-class reef breaks of Margaret River and Yallingup. The Margaret River region hosts the annual WSL Surfing Championship Tour event, drawing the world's best surfers to breaks like Margaret River Main Break, Surfers Point, and The Box. Beginner lessons are available at Scarborough.

3

Sandboarding — Lancelin Sand Dunes

Easy to Moderate

Lancelin's spectacular coastal dunes — some reaching 20 metres high — are one of WA's most accessible adventure thrills. Sandboarding (standing or on your stomach) down the steep dune faces delivers an adrenaline rush and extraordinary views over the Turquoise Coast. Boards are hireable from Lancelin village.

4

Skydiving — Perth and Rottnest Island

No experience required (tandem)

Tandem skydiving over the WA coastline offers extraordinary views — the turquoise Indian Ocean, Perth's beaches, and the white sands of Lancelin from 14,000 feet. Rottnest Island skydiving offers the thrilling bonus of landing on the island with quokkas as your welcoming committee. All jumps are with experienced instructors for first-timers.

5

Kitesurfing and Kite Buggying — Lancelin

Intermediate to Advanced (lessons available for beginners)

Lancelin is considered one of Australia's top kitesurfing destinations, with the strong south-westerly trade winds from October to March and a long beach with a shallow lagoon ideal for learners. The annual Lancelin Ocean Classic in January is one of Australia's most prestigious kitesurfing competitions. Kite buggying on the beach flats is also popular.

6

Sea Kayaking — Rottnest Island and Shoalwater Bay

Easy to Moderate

Sea kayaking around Rottnest Island's 63 bays and limestone arches is one of WA's finest active experiences, paddling among dolphins, sea lions, and diverse birdlife in crystal-clear Indian Ocean water. The Rockingham Wild Encounters kayaking tours at Shoalwater Bay allow kayakers to paddle alongside wild dolphins in the calm Shoalwater Marine Park waters.

7

Gorge Hiking and Canyoning — Karijini National Park

Moderate to Very Hard

Karijini's gorge walks are some of Australia's most adventurous and physically demanding. The Class 4-5 gorges (Weano, Knox, Hancock) require scrambling over boulders, swimming through cold water, and navigating narrow rock corridors. The spectacular reward — Handrail Pool, Kermits Pool, and the junction of four gorges at Oxer Lookout — makes every step worthwhile. Guided gorge tours are available for those wanting expert local knowledge.

8

4WD Adventure — Gibb River Road

Advanced (4WD experience required)

The legendary Gibb River Road — 660km of unsealed red dirt road through the heart of the ancient Kimberley between Derby and Kununurra — is one of Australia's great 4WD adventures. The road passes through remote gorges (Windjana, Bell, Manning), boab tree-lined plains, ancient Aboriginal rock art sites, and remote Kimberley cattle stations. Allow 5-7 days minimum for the full road.

9

Rock Climbing — Kalbarri and Albany

Beginner to Advanced

Western Australia has excellent rock climbing on granite (Porongurup Range, Bald Rock near Cranbrook) and limestone formations (Kalbarri sea cliffs). The Porongurup Range near Albany has excellent multi-pitch granite climbing on ancient 1.1-billion-year-old domes. Kalbarri's coastal limestone cliffs offer sea cliff climbing with ocean views. Abseiling into Kalbarri's gorges is also popular.

10

Abseiling — Kalbarri National Park

Beginner to Moderate (with operator)

Abseiling down the dramatic red and white banded limestone gorge walls of Kalbarri National Park provides an extraordinary perspective on this spectacular landscape. Beginner-friendly guided abseiling trips descend the gorge cliffs above the Murchison River, with all equipment and instruction provided.
