Sardinia Adventure Activities Guide 2025
Discover thrilling outdoor activities and adventure experiences in Sardinia.
Sardinia is Italy's second-largest island, famed for its pristine turquoise waters, rugged interior mountains, and ancient Nuragic civilizations. The island offers an extraordinary blend of dramatic coastlines, traditional villages, and vibrant cities that remain authentically Italian.
Top Adventure Experiences
The most exciting activities Sardinia has to offer.
Selvaggio Blu Trekking
Italy's most extreme trekking route, traversing 45 km of untamed Gulf of Orosei limestone coastline with technical scrambling, rope work, rappelling, and bivouacking on wild remote beaches. Considered one of the great adventure routes of Europe.
Rock Climbing — Gulf of Orosei
The limestone cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei are among the best rock climbing in the Mediterranean, with routes from beginner multi-pitch to extreme sport climbing. The most iconic route is the spectacular sea-cliff of Pedra Longa (a 128m free-standing pinnacle) near Baunei. Many climbers base in Cala Gonone or Baunei for week-long climbing holidays.
Scuba Diving — Marine Protected Areas
Sardinia's marine protected areas have exceptional diving with outstanding visibility (often 25–30m). Key sites include the Villasimius and Capo Carbonara MPA (sea turtles, grouper, wreck of the Romagna), the Alghero coral reef, and the Cala Gonone caves. The Italian navy scuttled several ships around Sardinia creating excellent wreck diving.
Canyoning in the Supramonte
The limestone gorges and canyons of the Supramonte offer thrilling canyoning adventures involving abseiling, water slides, jumps, and swimming through underground sections. The most spectacular canyoning is in the Su Gorroppu tributary canyons and the dramatic gorges near Oliena.
Kite Surfing — Porto Pollo
Porto Pollo on the Strait of Bonifacio is one of Europe's best kite surfing destinations, with strong, consistent thermal winds channelled through the strait, shallow water perfect for learning, and international kiteboarding schools. The combination of reliable wind and warm, safe conditions makes it a world-class kite surfing venue.
Horse Riding in Barbagia
Sardinia has an ancient horse culture dating back to the Nuragic period. The Barbagia mountains and the Giara di Gesturi plateau (home to the rare wild Sardinian ponies) offer exceptional riding through landscapes rarely accessible otherwise. Many agriturismo offer riding experiences with their own horses.
Sea Kayaking — Gulf of Orosei
Sea kayaking is perhaps the best way to experience the Gulf of Orosei at your own pace, paddling through sea caves, under overhanging cliffs, and onto beaches with no other access. Multiple operators offer guided half-day and full-day tours, and week-long camping kayak expeditions.
Paragliding over Barbagia
The thermal conditions over the Barbagia mountains and above the Gulf of Orosei create excellent paragliding opportunities. Tandem flights from launch sites above Orgosolo and Oliena provide extraordinary aerial perspectives of the Supramonte, the gorges, and the distant coastline.
Off-Road 4x4 Driving — Costa Verde
The wild Costa Verde coastline with its giant sand dunes, abandoned silver mines, and remote beaches requires a 4x4 for full exploration. Guided off-road tours navigate the unpaved tracks through the dunes to beaches like Piscinas, with stops at the abandoned mining towns of Ingurtosu and Naracauli.
Windsurfing — Mistral at Capo Testa
The northernmost tip of Sardinia at Capo Testa catches the powerful Maestrale wind perfectly, creating excellent windsurfing conditions particularly in spring and autumn. The scenery of the granite headlands, clear turquoise water, and Corsica in the background is spectacular.
