Top Adventure Experiences
The most exciting activities Bhutan has to offer.
Tiger's Nest Monastery Trek
The iconic hike to Paro Taktsang monastery involves a 900m vertical climb through pine forests to the sacred monastery perched on a sheer granite cliff. The challenging ascent rewards with breathtaking Himalayan views and access to one of the holiest sites in Vajrayana Buddhism.
White-Water Rafting on Mo Chhu River
The Mo Chhu (Mother River) flowing through Punakha Valley offers exciting Class III-IV rapids through spectacular valley scenery with views of Punakha Dzong. The 10-15 km rafting route combines thrilling rapids with calmer sections ideal for appreciating the lush sub-tropical vegetation and mountains.
Mountain Biking on Forest Trails
Bhutan's mountain terrain offers world-class downhill and cross-country biking on ancient trading trails through forests, past farmhouses, and along river valleys. Popular routes include the descent from Dochula Pass to Thimphu and trail networks around Paro Valley through apple orchards and pine forests.
Jomolhari Base Camp Trek
The 8-12 day trek to the base of sacred Mount Jomolhari (7,314m) is one of Bhutan's most dramatic high-altitude expeditions. The trail passes through pristine wilderness, ancient fortresses, yak herder camps, and high-altitude passes at 5,000m with views of unclimbed Himalayan giants.
Archery at Royal Bhutan Archery Ground
Try Bhutan's national sport at the Royal Bhutan Archery Federation ground in Thimphu. Traditional bamboo bow or modern compound bow sessions are available with instruction from national-level archers. Weekend tournaments between local teams offer an authentic spectator experience with traditional songs and friendly banter.
Kayaking on Punakha River
Single and tandem sea kayaking on the calmer sections of the Punakha/Sunkosh river system below Punakha Dzong. Guided paddles pass under the walls of the dzong, through farmland, and into gorge sections with excellent bird watching opportunities for kingfishers, herons, and rare Himalayan species.
Druk Path Trek (5-Day Classic)
The classic 5-day trans-Himalayan trek from Paro to Thimphu follows ancient royal trade routes past high-altitude glacial lakes, yak pastures, and rhododendron forests to 4,200m. The trail offers consistently stunning views of Gangkhar Puensum and the Himalayan massif along with unique highland ecosystem.
Traditional Hot Stone Bath (Dotsho)
A therapeutic tradition unique to Bhutan involving river stones heated in a fire until glowing hot, then placed into a wooden tub filled with water and medicinal herbs including artemisia, sichuan pepper, and local mountain plants. The bath provides deep muscle relaxation and is a genuine cultural experience available at many lodges.
