Top Adventure Experiences

The most exciting activities England has to offer.

1

Rock Climbing at Stanage Edge

Beginner to Expert

Stanage Edge is England's premier outdoor rock climbing venue, offering over 1,000 routes on gritstone ranging from beginner slabs to expert overhangs. The edge stretches 4 miles through the Dark Peak; its popularity has never diminished since the sport of gritstone climbing was established here in the 19th century. BMC-registered guides offer introductory sessions.

2

Surfing at Fistral Beach, Newquay

Beginner to Intermediate

Fistral Beach is the home of English surfing culture, hosting the prestigious Boardmasters festival each August. The consistent Atlantic swell and sandy bottom make it ideal for learning. Multiple RNLI-affiliated surf schools operate year-round. The nearby Towan Beach and Watergate Bay are excellent alternatives.

3

Wild Swimming in the Lake District

Beginner to Experienced

The Lake District is England's paradise for wild swimming, with dozens of glacial lakes and mountain tarns offering exceptional open-water swimming. Rydal Water, Grasmere, Buttermere, and the various tarns above the major fells are popular. The water temperature varies from 4°C in winter to 17°C in August.

4

Mountain Biking in the Peak District

Intermediate to Expert

The Peak District offers outstanding mountain biking on a network of bridleways, purpose-built trails, and disused railway lines. The Monsal Trail (converted railway) is family-friendly; the gritstone moors and technical limestone descents above Hathersage and Castleton are more demanding. Hope Valley is the main hub.

5

Kayaking and Canoeing on the Wye

Beginner to Intermediate

The River Wye is one of the finest canoe touring rivers in England and Wales, running from Hay-on-Wye through the spectacular Wye Valley to Chepstow. The section from Symonds Yat is particularly beautiful, with wooded gorge scenery and peregrine falcons. Day hire from Canoe the Wye at Symonds Yat.

6

Coasteering in Cornwall

Beginner to Intermediate

Coasteering involves traversing sea cliffs by swimming, scrambling, jumping, and cliff diving. Cornwall's dramatic granite sea cliffs and coves offer exceptional coasteering in the hands of professional guides. Kynance Cove, Bedruthan Steps, and the north Cornwall sea stack area are popular locations.

7

Sea Kayaking around the Farne Islands

Intermediate

The Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast are home to Europe's largest grey seal colony (6,000+) and England's most accessible puffin colony (April-July). Kayaking around the islands offers intimate encounters with wildlife impossible from tourist boats. The sea conditions require intermediate paddling ability.

8

Multi-day Trek on the Pennine Way

Strenuous

England's oldest and most famous National Trail, the Pennine Way runs 268 miles from Edale in the Peak District to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland. The route crosses three national parks, passes Hadrian's Wall, and traverses some of England's most remote moorland. Wild camping is permitted on most of the moorland sections.

9

Zip Line at Eden Project

Beginner

The Eden Project's zip line flies across the clay pit in which the biomes sit, providing a bird's-eye view of this extraordinary landscape. At 200m long and 50m above the ground at its highest point, it is genuinely thrilling. One of the most spectacular urban zip line settings in England.

10

Paragliding in the South Downs

Beginner (tandem) to Advanced

Devil's Dyke in the South Downs is one of England's finest paragliding sites, with the chalk escarpment generating reliable thermals above the Sussex Weald.
