Famous pink-sand lagoon at the northwest tip of Crete, reached by boat from Kissamos or by a dirt track.
Balos Lagoon lies at the tip of the Gramvousa peninsula in northwest Crete, about 55 km from Chania, where pale pink sand and shallow turquoise water meet. It can be reached by a rough dirt road to a car park followed by a steep 20-minute walk down, or by a day boat from Kissamos that also calls at the Venetian fortress on Gramvousa island. The area is protected and sunshade and sunbed rules apply, with a fee for some services. Summer crowds are heavy, and the road is suited to careful drivers only. Boat trips take 6 to 7 hours and give about 2 hours on the beach. Weather and wind can cancel sailings.
