About Chania

Chania sits on the northwest coast of Crete, about 140 km west of Heraklion, and is built around the Old Venetian Harbour with its lighthouse, Firka fortress and the domed Küçük Hasan Mosque. Behind the harbour, the Topanas and Splantzia quarters hold Venetian mansions, Ottoman houses and the cross-shaped Municipal Market. Chania International Airport (CHQ) lies about 14 km east on the Akrotiri peninsula. The White Mountains rise to the south, with Samaria Gorge about 45 km away, while the beaches of Balos and Elafonisi, Lake Kournas and the Akrotiri monasteries are all day trips.

  • Book Balos, Elafonisi and Samaria Gorge transport a day or two ahead in July and August.
  • Carry cash: some bakeries, market stalls and bus kiosks do not take cards.

  • Eat one street back from the harbour quay for lower prices.
