Venetian harbour fortress of 1620 that houses the Maritime Museum of Crete and marks the 1913 union of Crete with Greece.
Firka (Firkas) is the Venetian fortress at the western entrance of the Old Venetian Harbour, built in 1620 to defend the port and later used as a prison and barracks. The Maritime Museum of Crete is housed in its restored rooms and covers the island's naval history from Minoan ships to the Battle of Crete, with ship models, maps, weapons and photographs. It was on the fortress flagpole that the Greek flag was raised on 1 December 1913 to mark the union of Crete with Greece, an event commemorated every year. The ramparts give a good vantage over the harbour. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours. Opening days and ticket prices are reported inconsistently, so confirm before travelling.
