Shallow pink-sand lagoon and Natura 2000 sandbar on Crete's southwest tip.
Elafonisi is a protected lagoon and sandbar in the southwest corner of Crete, about 75 km from Chania, with pink-tinged sand and shallow warm water that can be crossed on foot to a small islet. The area is a Natura 2000 site and has shallow pools, dunes and juniper trees. It is very busy in July and August when tour buses arrive from Chania, so early morning and late afternoon are more peaceful. Facilities include loungers, umbrellas, tavernas and toilets; fees apply for loungers. The drive from Chania takes about 1.5 to 2 hours on winding roads. Pack shade and water, as the sandbar has little cover. Do not remove sand or shells.
