Chania (Chaniá) is the largest city of western Crete, a port of about 108,000 people with a Venetian harbour, an Ottoman-era Old Town and easy access to Samaria Gorge, Balos and Elafonisi.
Chania's nightlife is a waterfront scene: cocktail lounges and wine bars around the Venetian harbour, jazz in the Old Town lanes and tavernas with live Greek music. Large clubs are in Platanias, about 11 km west, and in Heraklion; the Old Town stays relaxed.
Bars fill after 21:00, harbour terraces peak around sunset and the dancing venues run past 02:00 on Friday and Saturday in season.
