White monastery on a seaside rock reached by 98 steps, a short drive from Elafonisi.
Chrysoskalitissa Monastery sits on a rock above the sea at the southwest tip of Crete, reached by 98 steps and just a few kilometres from Elafonisi beach. The present white church dates from the 19th century on older foundations, and a local legend says one of the steps is made of gold and visible only to the sinless. The monastery is small and quiet, with a courtyard and sea views that make it a good stop between Elafonisi and the drive back to Chania. Visitors should dress modestly, with covered shoulders and knees. Hours vary and the church may be closed in the afternoon.
