A 3,500-step, 13-storey stepwell of the 9th century, one of the deepest and most photogenic in India.
Chand Baori at Abhaneri was built around the 9th century under King Chanda and is among the deepest stepwells in India, with 3,500 narrow steps in perfect geometric patterns descending about 20 m. Next to it stands the Harshat Mata Temple, which has carved pillars and was damaged in the 11th century. The stepwell is a protected ASI site, and visitors can no longer descend to the bottom steps, so photography is from the upper levels. Reported entry is about ₹300 for foreigners and ₹25 for Indians, with online discounts. Opening hours are approximately dawn to dusk or 8:00AM to 6:00PM. The village is small, with few facilities, so the trip is usually half a day.
