India's largest inland salt lake and a Ramsar wetland that hosts flamingos in winter. Its white salt pans look like a beach but the water is shallow and not for swimming.
Sambhar Lake is the largest inland salt lake in India, about 80 km west of Jaipur, and a Ramsar site. In winter it attracts flamingos and other migratory waders. The lake edge is white salt crust and shallow brine, giving a beach-like horizon at sunset, but the water is not for swimming and the salt works are active. A long causeway and the old Sambhar town give access, and the site is best visited by car. The lake also has Mahabharata and Shakambhari Devi legends.
