The Chania Lighthouse stands at the end of the harbour breakwater, marking the entrance to the Old Venetian Harbour on the north coast of Crete. The first tower was built by the Venetians in the late 16th century; the present structure dates from the 19th-century Egyptian-Ottoman period and was restored in the 2000s. The walk out along the breakwater takes about 15 to 20 minutes from the Firka fortress side and gives the classic view of the harbour, the Old Town roofs and the White Mountains. The tower itself is not normally open to the public, so the draw is the walk and the sunset light. The breakwater has no shade and can be windy; waves occasionally wash over it in winter storms.
