Horseshoe-shaped Venetian harbour at the centre of Chania Old Town, ringed by pastel buildings, tavernas and the sea-fortress lighthouse walk.
The Old Venetian Harbour (Enetiko Limani) is the heart of Chania, a horseshoe-shaped basin on the north coast of Crete laid out by the Venetians from the 14th century onward. The quays are lined with pastel Venetian and Ottoman buildings that now hold tavernas, cafes and shops, while the Firka fortress guards the western entrance and a long breakwater runs out to the lighthouse. A full circuit of the waterfront is about 1.5 km and takes 30 to 45 minutes at a strolling pace. The harbour is at its most atmospheric at sunset and again after dark, when the lighthouse and mosque are lit. Waterfront restaurants charge higher prices than streets one block inland, so many visitors stroll here and eat in the side lanes.
