Open Water Swimming
Lake Annecy is consistently ranked among the cleanest lakes in Europe with EU Blue Flag water quality. Supervised areas operate July–August at Albigny and Marquisats. Water temperature reaches 22–24°C in July and August, making it comfortable for extended swims.
Kayaking and Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Hire stations at Lake Annecy (Roul'ma Poule, Marquisats) and several other lakes provide kayaks, paddleboards, and electric boats by the hour or half-day. No experience required for flat-water lake use.
Sailing and Windsurfing
Lake Bourget and Lac de Paladru have established sailing clubs that welcome visiting sailors and offer course hire. Afternoon thermal winds are reliable at both lakes in summer.
Canoeing and Canyoning

Coastline Note
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a landlocked region with no ocean coastline. All bathing areas are on alpine lakes, volcanic crater lakes, or navigable rivers. The quality and character of these freshwater swimming areas is exceptionally high — Lake Annecy holds EU Blue Flag status and is considered one of the clearest lakes in Europe.

Caution
Watch for tide changes and marine life — jellyfish blooms, sea urchins on rocky entries, occasional shark or stingray advisories. Don’t swim alone, especially at dawn or dusk.
Tip
Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes and after every swim. Take shade between 11 am and 3 pm — the sun is harsher than people expect, even when the air is cool.

Keep valuables out of sight or back at the accommodation. Beach theft is a small-but-real risk at busy beaches; never leave bags unattended while you’re in the water.

Is there a supervised swimming zone at Talloires?
Unlike the city beaches at Albigny and Marquisats, Talloires does not operate a formally lifeguarded swimming zone in summer. Swimmers should assess conditions independently and should be competent in open water.
