Plage du Pont d'Arc, Rivière Ardèche

Plage du Pont d'Arc is a river beach located directly beneath one of France's most iconic natural landmarks: the Pont d'Arc, a 60-metre-wide natural limestone arch spanning the Ardèche River at the entrance to the Ardèche Gorge, near Vallon-Pont-d'Arc in the Ardèche department. The beach sits at the base of the arch where a broad gravel and sandy river bar has formed on the inside bend of the river, 170 kilometres south of Lyon. The Ardèche River at this point runs clear and warm in stable summer conditions, flowing over a limestone bed that filters and clarifies the water. The surrounding landscape is classic Ardèche limestone: white and ochre cliffs rising from the riverbanks, dense garrigue scrubland, and the turquoise-green water threading through deep rock formations that are part of the wider Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes natural heritage. Unlike the lake beaches further north in the region, Pont d'Arc offers a river-swimming experience: the water flows at a perceptible current in spring and after rainfall, and swimming conditions must be assessed daily against the river level indicator boards posted at the Parking Pont d'Arc car park. In stable summer conditions — typically July and early August — the water runs shallow enough for wading and calm pools form along the gravel bars. Canoe and kayak hire is the dominant activity: multiple operators in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc offer half-day and full-day descents of the Ardèche Gorge, typically beginning from the Pont d'Arc area. The beach area is accessible from the Parking Pont d'Arc, which connects to the Route des Gorges (D290) and fills rapidly on summer mornings. Toilets are located at the car park. Snack bars and restaurants are clustered in the village of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, 3 kilometres upstream. A car is essentially required as no direct public transport serves the site; the nearest railway station is Montélimar, 50 kilometres away.
