Plage de Nantua, Lac de Nantua

Plage de Nantua is a compact municipal beach on the southern shore of Lac de Nantua, a small natural alpine lake set within a glacially carved valley in the Ain department, 75 kilometres east of Lyon. The beach sits directly within the town of Nantua, accessible from Chemin de la Plage, and serves primarily as the local leisure beach for residents of this small Jura gateway town. The lake is striking in appearance: surrounded by steep wooded slopes rising abruptly from the water's edge and fed by cold springs that give the water a deep blue-green opacity distinct from the more turquoise lakes of Haute-Savoie. The beach is modest in scale — a mixed grass-and-gravel strip approximately 150 metres long — but the enclosed Alpine setting compensates for the limited size. A supervised swimming zone operates in summer, and the grassed relaxation area has a children's play area and seasonal snack kiosk. Toilets are provided on-site. The atmosphere is firmly local and unhurried: Nantua does not attract large tourist flows, making this one of the quieter and more authentically small-town alpine lake beaches in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Lac de Nantua is cold by lake standards: spring-fed and sitting at 479 metres altitude, the lake warms slowly and rarely exceeds 20°C even in August. Visitors accustomed to warmer sea or lowland lake temperatures should plan accordingly. The town of Nantua is worth a brief walk after a swim — the medieval church, old town streets, and a small local history museum are pleasant complements to a lakeside day. The region is also known for Sauce Nantua, a cream sauce made with crayfish from the local rivers, available at town restaurants. Reaching Nantua by rail from Lyon Part-Dieu takes approximately one hour and ten minutes at a cost of around €14 one-way; Nantua station is a ten-minute walk from the beach, making it one of the few genuinely car-free accessible alpine lake beaches in the region.
