Plage du Lac de Paladru

Plage du Lac de Paladru is the principal public beach on Lac de Paladru, a natural glacial lake in the Isère department, 40 kilometres north-west of Grenoble. The lake sits at 313 metres altitude — considerably lower than the Haute-Savoie Alpine lakes — and at a maximum depth of 40 metres. This lower altitude makes it one of the warmer natural lakes in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, a practical advantage that draws local families and watersports enthusiasts from Grenoble and Lyon throughout summer. The beach fronts the village of Paladru on the lake's eastern shore along Route du Lac, and is a broad mixed strip of sand and grass extending to the water's edge. Water clarity is good and the colour tends toward a translucent green in the shallower sections near the shore. The beach is well-equipped for watersports: a sailing club operates dinghy hire, and windsurfing is a popular activity that benefits from reliable afternoon thermal breezes that develop across the lake from around 13:00 onward. A supervised swimming zone operates in summer and showers and toilets are available on-site; a seasonal snack bar serves visitors. The flat, open beach suits families, and the adjacent picnic area under mature trees is well-used. The lake has an unusual historical distinction: it is the site of two submerged prehistoric settlements, one Neolithic (approximately 2700 BCE) and one early medieval, discovered during lake level surveys in the 20th century. The Musée du Lac de Paladru in the nearby village of Charavines, 4 kilometres away, documents these underwater archaeological finds. Access by car from Grenoble takes approximately 40 minutes via the D1075. Public transport requires a train to Rives (20 minutes from Grenoble, operated by SNCF), then a 10-kilometre cycle or taxi to the lake.
