Plage des Romains, Lac du Bourget

Plage des Romains is the main public beach on Lac du Bourget, France's largest natural lake, located at Avenue du Petit Port on the eastern shore approximately 2 kilometres from the spa town of Aix-les-Bains in Savoie. The beach occupies a broad, flat strip of grass and gravel adjacent to the lake, sheltered from prevailing south-westerly winds by the massif of La Chambotte to the north. The lake stretches 18 kilometres from north to south between the Savoie foothills, and from the beach the views extend across to the Bauges massif and the ridge of Mont Revard, providing a striking Alpine panorama. Lac du Bourget is notably deeper and colder than Lac d'Annecy: average water temperatures in midsummer hover around 20°C in the upper layers, and the lake's depth of up to 145 metres contributes to a deep blue-grey colouration distinct from the turquoise of smaller alpine lakes. The beach area is well-managed by the Aix-les-Bains municipality: lifeguards patrol the supervised swimming zone through July and August, and facilities include toilets, changing rooms, and a seasonal snack bar. A sailing club operates from the adjacent harbour, and waterskiing and windsurfing equipment hire is available from operators at the beach. The watersports focus makes Plage des Romains particularly popular with active visitors: the lake's open expanse provides good conditions for sailing and windsurfing when an afternoon breeze picks up from the south. The thermal spa town of Aix-les-Bains lies 2 kilometres away, combining a lakeside swim with a visit to the town's famous baths or the lakeside Grand Port promenade. Transport links are excellent: Aix-les-Bains railway station receives direct trains from Chambéry (15 minutes), Lyon Part-Dieu (1 hour 5 minutes), and Paris (approximately 3 hours on TGV); a local bus connects the station to the beach and the flat cycle path from the town centre reaches the beach in under ten minutes.
