Silver Beach, Beihai (sea-coast day trip)

Silver Beach (Yintan) lies in Yinhai District, Beihai, on the Gulf of Tonkin coast, about 210 km south of Nanning and outside the city's own municipality, making it a full-day rather than half-day excursion. The beach is a long stretch of fine, pale sand rather than pebble, backed by open water with a gentle, gradually shelving profile typical of the Gulf of Tonkin; the sea here is generally calm rather than surf-heavy, since the bay is sheltered from the open South China Sea swell, and the water colour ranges from a hazy green-grey close to shore to a clearer blue-green further out on calm days. The beach runs open and largely unbroken along the coast rather than forming a tight cove, giving it a broad, exposed feel with little wind shelter beyond the beachfront buildings. It draws a mixed, family-oriented crowd for the most part, with swimming, walking and photography as the main draws rather than a party or surf scene, though the beachfront gets busy with domestic tourists during the April-October swimming season and around Chinese public holidays. Amenities include seasonal lifeguard supervision within the marked swimming zones, changing rooms, showers and lockers, and umbrella and lounger hire along the main beachfront; seafood restaurants and stalls line the promenade behind the sand, offering fresh Gulf of Tonkin catch. Reaching Silver Beach from Nanning takes about 1 hour 10 minutes by high-speed rail to Beihai Railway Station, followed by a 20-30 minute onward journey by city bus (routes 17, 106, 21, 102 or 20) or taxi to cover the final 8 km to the coast. Frequent high-speed rail services run back to Nanning through the evening, so a same-day round trip is practical without needing to stay overnight in Beihai, though an early departure from Nanning maximises beach time.
