Nanning is the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, a subtropical river city nicknamed the "Green City" (绿城) for the banyan-shaded avenues, flowering trees, and park systems that cover much of its urban area. The city sits on the Yong River (邕江), the chief southern tributary of the Xi River system, roughly 160 km from the Vietnamese border, which has made it China's principal gateway to Southeast Asia and the permanent host of the annual China-ASEAN Expo. Nanning is also the cultural center of the Zhuang, China's largest ethnic minority, and visitors come for the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities, the terraced gardens of Qingxiu Mountain, and a rice-noodle food culture built around laoyou fen, the city's sour-spicy "old friend" noodles.
