Saklıkent Gorge Trek

Saklıkent Gorge is one of Turkey's longest and deepest canyons, cutting through the Akdağlar mountains approximately 45 kilometres southeast of Fethiye in Muğla province. The gorge entrance sits at the end of a short wooden boardwalk from the car park and ticket office; an entrance fee of approximately ₺100 per person applies. From Fethiye, the gorge is reached by private car via the D400 highway (45 km, 50 minutes) with ample parking at the entrance, or by dolmuş to Eşen followed by a short taxi ride. The trek itself covers roughly 5 kilometres round-trip along the gorge floor, entering through a narrow slot between walls that rise 300 metres overhead. The defining characteristic of Saklıkent is the cold mountain river that flows through it — hikers wade ankle- to knee-deep through sections of fast-moving water, making waterproof sandals or old shoes with grip an absolute necessity. The gorge floor is predominantly flat, composed of polished river rock and smooth limestone, with some sections requiring careful foot placement on submerged boulders. Elevation gain is minimal throughout the accessible section. The first 600 metres of the gorge are served by a raised wooden walkway and a rope system to assist in the river crossing, after which the gorge opens into a wider section with deeper pools. Café platforms suspended over the river near the entrance serve Turkish tea and simple food. The inner gorge beyond the first kilometre narrows significantly and involves sustained wading up to thigh depth in the peak melt season (April–May); only experienced canyoners should proceed beyond the main tourist section without a guide. The season runs from April through October; in winter, flash flood risk and cold water temperatures close the gorge.
